The Department of English and Communications: An Overview
We believe this department, with its five tracks and five full-time faculty members, serves the institution and its students by:
- Providing students with solid liberal arts grounding and important professional development.
- Providing innovative, timely, and marketable majors while strengthening our liberal arts mission.
- Providing academic-work linkages in Communications, Education, and Writing related fields.
The department offers five major tracks (42-45 hours each):
- British and American Literature
- Communications
- Creative Writing
- Professional Writing
- Secondary English Education
This program prepares students to succeed in the academic study of literature or in a range of communications fields. Our majors gain a solid foundation for graduate school or for careers in editing, teaching, communications, business, law, and writing.
Majors are encouraged to get involved in the ‘Burnian student newspaper, WBVR radio club, theater productions, on-campus public relations and student life promotional activities. Hands-on, personal guidance is provided in order to enable students to become their own creators, producers and managers.
The Graphics major is now housed in the Art Department.
