What is Professional Writing?

Professional writing majors and minors complete a curriculum with courses that allow them to work on real products for real clients. Students learn how to balance client and audience needs, assess and meet the conventions of professional genres, and successfully create a portfolio of writing samples to demonstrate their knowledge.

Graduates leave with a thorough portfolio, including samples of a variety of professional writing genres and a special focus project completed during senior seminar.

Coordinated by program faculty and the Career Services Office, internships provide additional application of course content in an off-campus professional environment.

Professional Writing faculty are published writers and members of professional organizations such as the Association of Writing Programs and the Modern Language Association.
