The Department of English & Communications offers students a variety of clubs and organizations.
The ’Burnian: The oldest college newspaper in Illinois, The ’Burnian is a bi-weekly, student-run publication. It offers tuition, paid, and volunteer positions for writers, editors, graphic designers, and photographers. Staff of The ‘Burnian are also members of the Associated Collegiate Press and the Illinois College Press Association.
Blackburn Radio: Blackburn’s student-run online radio station offers students the opportunity to work as trained DJs. Students create their own shows, operate studio equipment, and learn first-hand what it takes to be an on-air personality.
Lethologica: Inspiring and fostering creative writing, the club provides a supportive environment for writers to discuss their work and encourages development by offering constructive criticism and feedback.
VORTEX: Blackburn’s literary magazine collects submissions from writers across campus and encourages students enrolled in Creative Writing courses to serve on the editorial board.
Podcasting: Students have access to a fully equipped production studio with equipment and facilities for audio and audiovisual production, including a podcasting station, video cameras and lighting equipment, and a green screen for studio production.
Gateway Media Literacy Partner: Blackburn is an institutional member of this regional nonprofit group. Blackburn students participate and attend various media literacy events during the annual Media Literacy Week.
Blackburn is also an institutional member of the Midwest Writing Centers Association.
