Diversity Learning Circles – Series

An event every month that begins at 12:00 pm on day Last of the month, repeating until May 13, 2023

The Diversity Learning Circles program is an interactive topic discussion where participants from diverse backgrounds and experiences can come together to learn from one another.

Come join us during your lunch break and share in the discussion.

August
Guest Speaker: Dr. Karen Dillon – Dr. Dillon will share information from the “Legacy of Slavery” workshop she attended this past semester.

September
Guest Speaker: Dr. Collin Vorbeck will lead a discussion for September’s Diversity Learning Circle series entitled: Microintervention Strategies. Dr. Vorbeck will provide a new concept, microinterventions, the everyday antibias actions taken by targets, parents, significant others, allies, and well-intentioned bystanders to counteract, challenge, diminish, or neutralize individual and systemic racism. Dr. Vorbeck will read passages from the book “Microintervention Strategies: What You Can Do to Disarm and Dismantle Individual and Systemic Racism and Bias” to lead the discussion.

October
Guest Speaker:  Brianna Sutton will lead a discussion during October’s Diversity Learning Circle series entitled: Supporting Students in Higher Education. Brianna is the Director of Blackburn and Beyond. Brianna will provide simple strategies about working with a variety of students in a variety of settings. Also, examining how working with the neurodiverse population does not differ from the general population with the same expectations and consequences but with more patience and time.

November
Guest Speaker:  Dr. Angela Morenz will lead a discussion about the impact that Title IX has had in the 50 years since it was passed into law. The discussion will include the history of sports for women, the challenge to status quo, and a look at the numbers (participation, coaching, administration, etc).

The first 10 participants will receive a gift supporting the 50th anniversary of Title IX.

February
Guest Speaker:  Dianna Ruyle will lead a discussion during February’s Diversity Learning Circle series entitled: Courageous Conversations. Difficult conversations happen everyday on campus. How we engage in these conversations can result in a positive or negative outcome. Let’s talk about how we can have more positive conversations and build relationships.

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will host monthly Diversity Learning Circles lunch and learn discussions. This discussion will provide a safe space for participants to talk and engage with each other about current issues impacting our local, national, and global communities. Please join us on the last Wednesday of each month from 12:00p.m. – 12:45p.m. to engage in various topics focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Each session will be hosted by a guest speaker.
