December 8, 2017, Carlinville, IL— Richard Russell, a Carlinville native and Blackburn College graduate has a reason to break into song this holiday season. The alum’s play “It Takes a Rainbow”, which was staged by Russel and lyricist Emily Thompson, was recently awarded “Best Music” after showing at the Midtown International Theater Festival in New York.
It Takes a Rainbow, which centers on a tale of seven different colored lizards realizing and accepting their differences, received a total of five nominations at the festival, also taking home the award for “Best Set Design”. The musical, which has in the past featured an all-child cast played to the festival including adult cast members as frogs. When asked about the production Russell said, “This was the first year we’ve used both adult and children actors,” he said. “We weren’t sure how it would go, but it was actually a great combination.”
The musical will continue to play to audiences at undetermined venues as Russel hopes to license it for larger audiences after its 3 sold out performances. You can find out more about It Takes a Rainbow at its official web site, http://www.ittakesarainbow.com/
