SUMMARY:Eberle Speaker Series: Dr. Cynthia Ganote
DESCRIPTION:INCLUSION & BELONGING EXPERT DR. CYNTHIA GANOTE TO SPEAK AT BLACKBURN COLLEGE AS PART OF EBERLE LECTURE SERIES\nThursday\, April 9 event in Bothwell Auditorium is free and open to the public\nBlackburn College will host Dr. Cynthia Ganote\, an inclusion and belonging expert\, educator\, and consultant\, as part of the Kathleen J. Eberle Memorial Lecture Series in the Social Sciences. The event will take place on Thursday\, April 9\, at 7:00 pm in Bothwell Auditorium and is free and open to the public. \nGanote works with individuals and organizations to strengthen communication and build more inclusive environments. A sociologist by training\, she has spent more than 25 years teaching and working in areas related to race\, class\, gender\, and inequality. Ganote has taught at Vanderbilt University\, Saint Mary’s College of California\, and the University of Louisville. She received the 2022 Multicultural Teaching Award at Louisville\, which recognizes faculty who create inclusive learning environments. \nHer work centers on how small\, everyday interactions shape culture over time. Alongside colleagues Dr. Tasha Souza and Dr. Floyd Cheung\, Ganote co-developed microresistance training\, an approach that gives people practical tools to respond to microaggressions\, misunderstandings\, and conflict. The focus is on what can be done in the moment\, whether someone is directly affected or observing the exchange. \n“Conversations about belonging are happening across higher education\, and they are especially important on a campus like Blackburn where relationships and community are central to the student experience\,” said Dr. Trisha Prunty\, professor of psychology and social science division chair. “Dr. Ganote offers a way to think about those ideas beyond the classroom\, and we invite the community to be a part of that conversation.” \nThis event at Blackburn College is funded through the Kathleen J. Eberle Memorial Lecture Series in the Social Sciences\, an endowed fund established to bring guest lecturers and speakers to campus who will inspire\, engage\, and inform students\, faculty\, and the community in the area of social sciences\, with a focus on social justice issues.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Girls and Women in Sports Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the power\, passion\, and impact of women in athletics at Blackburn College’s 2026 Women in Sports Day Celebration on Saturday\, January 31. Join us beginning at 12:00 pm in the Blackburn Athletic Center for an inspiring program featuring a dynamic keynote speaker and student-athlete presentations honoring the trailblazing women who have shaped—and continue to shape—the world of sports. \nJustine Siegal will serve as the keynote speaker for the event. Read more about Siegal at the press release for the event. \n \nBlackburn College will celebrate the achievements\, leadership\, and lasting impact of women in athletics during its 2026 Women in Sports Day Celebration on Saturday\, January 31\, 2026\, beginning at 12:00 pm in the Blackburn Athletic Center. The event will feature keynote speaker Justine Siegal\, a nationally recognized baseball coach\, sports educator\, and advocate for gender equity in sports whose career has helped expand opportunities for women and girls in the game. The event is free\, but registration is required. \nSiegal is widely known for breaking barriers in the traditionally male-dominated world of baseball. In 2009\, she became the first woman to coach a professional men’s baseball team when she joined the Brockton Rox of the independent Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball. In 2011\, she again made history as the first woman to throw batting practice to a Major League Baseball team\, working with the Cleveland Indians during spring training. \nSiegal is also helping lead a new chapter for women’s athletics through the launch of the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL). The league will play its inaugural season in Springfield\, Illinois\, at Robin Roberts Stadium beginning August 1\, 2026\, with four teams representing Los Angeles\, San Francisco\, New York\, and Boston. League organizers selected Springfield for its central location and baseball history\, including one of the earliest paid women’s baseball games in 1875 and the city’s connection to the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The WPBL’s inaugural season will include a regular season\, playoffs\, and a championship\, creating a new professional league for elite women to compete in baseball. \nRead more about Siegal at the press release for the event. \nFollowing the program\, keep the celebration going by cheering on the Blackburn women’s basketball team as they face Principia College at 1:00 pm in Dawes Gymnasium. Alumni\, students\, families\, and friends are invited to come together to recognize the remarkable legacy and bright future of women in sports.

DESCRIPTION:View the MLK Convocation Program (PDF) > \n \n \nBlackburn College Martin Luther King\, Jr. Convocation 2026\nWednesday\, January 14\, 2026 at 4:00 pm in Bothwell Auditorium \nKeynote Speaker Dr. Margaret Lawler\nDr. Margaret “Margie” Lawler earned her bachelor’s degree in law enforcement administration from Western Illinois University in 1993 and her Master’s degree in College Student Personnel Administration from the University of Central Missouri in 1995. In 2019\, she completed her doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Community College Leadership at Ferris State University. \nDr. Lawler’s professional foundation is in Housing and Residential Life\, where she served for more than 18 years. Throughout her career\, she has developed extensive expertise in recruitment\, hiring\, staffing\, diversity initiatives\, and campus-wide programming. She credits her early work in student affairs for shaping her commitment to leading effective DEI spaces and advancing diversity\, equity\, and inclusion initiatives across organizations. Collaboration\, relationship-building\, and team\ndevelopment remain central to her leadership approach. She has hosted large-scale programs\, facilitated professional development training\, and continues to mentor doctoral students and former staff. \nIn 2010\, Dr. Lawler transitioned to corporate operations at Caterpillar\, Inc.\, first serving as a Materials Specialist and later being promoted to User Technician at the Corporate Headquarters in Peoria\, Illinois. During this time\, she earned her Six Sigma Green Belt certification—an achievement she considers pivotal in strengthening her process-improvement and operational leadership skills.\nDr. Lawler returned to higher education in 2015 at Illinois Central College\, where she served in two newly created full-time roles: Diverse Faculty Recruiter and Compliance Officer. She also taught freshman seminar courses as an adjunct faculty member\, further supporting student success. As the institution’s inaugural Executive Director of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion; Chief Diversity Officer; and Title IX Coordinator\, she developed both the institution’s compliance infrastructure and its DEI training programs. She also served as advisor to the Black Student Union and as the Designated School Official for the international student program. \nDr. Lawler’s career is defined by her willingness to lead with purpose and to build foundational programs from the ground up. In May 2023\, she accepted her current inaugural role as the Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Officer and Deputy Director of Personnel for the Illinois Secretary of State\, where she leads statewide DEI initiatives. \nDr. Lawler is a proud member of the Graduate Chapter of Epsilon Sigma – Sigma Gamma\nRho Sorority\, Inc. in Springfield\, IL – where she actively volunteers within her community\,\npartners with community leaders and supports programs for the local youth.

The Blackburn Community will also get a chance to share their “I Am Blackburn” story.  This is an opportunity to share what Blackburn means to you\, how you came to Blackburn and stories that connect you to the wonderful community. \nMembers of the community are asked to participate and represent their nationality (or culture) through their food. DEI will be covering all of the food expenses. We would only require the community members to cook their dishes for the event. Taste of Blackburn will serve as an opportunity for the Blackburn community to try the dishes of our fellow students and learn about the importance of diversity to our campus and society. \nIf anyone is interested in presenting a dish\, please fill out this form.

SUMMARY:What Were You Wearing - Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:April 2023 is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. \nAt colleges and universities around the country\, it has been reported that two-thirds of college students experience sexual harassment. Studies have also found approximately 26% of all female undergraduate students\, and nearly 7% of all male undergraduate students\, have experienced sexual assault. \nSurvivors of sexual assault are often asked\, “What were you wearing?” This form of victim-blaming has created a negative experience for survivors. Asking a survivor about what they were wearing implies that they did something wrong to invoke the attack. \nWhat Were You Wearing Exhibit\nThis April\, the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion will host an exhibit that displays and features stories of sexual violence and representation of what a victim was wearing at the time of their assault. The intent of the exhibit would be to remove the negative connotation of victim-blaming and debunk this myth that what an individual was wearing was “their fault.” The What You Were Wearing exhibit is a national program that many colleges and universities host. The exhibit’s goal is to bring a greater awareness of the myths surrounding survivors of sexual assault\, and that what they were wearing has no bearing on being assaulted. The exhibit will be displayed for three days for participants in April and a featured presenter will share their account of a sexual assault they experienced. The presenter will provide a shared account of their experience while highlighting “What they were wearing\,” how they have overcome the assault through support and resources\, and they will answer questions. \nIt will be the goal to display the exhibit in an area on campus that will highlight featured stories shared by survivors of sexual assault. The Executive Director of DEI will solicit shared stories of survivors within the Blackburn community and surrounding area (students\, staff\, faculty\, and community members). These shared stories will remain anonymous and on a volunteer basis. The Executive Director of DEI will launch a campaign in partnership with Marketing and Public Relations. In addition\, the Executive Director of DEI will partner with the Art department to facilitate and coordinate the actual exhibit for display. \nShare Your Story\nWhat Were You Wearing Submission Form\nDo you have a story you want to share to add to our Installation of the What Were You Wearing Art exhibit? Fill out the online form and share your story today. \nFor more information on the history of the project and to read the “What I Was Wearing Poem\,” click here.

SUMMARY:Cyntoia Brown-Long: Speaking Event & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Tickets can be reserved for the free event beginning March 3. Find tickets on Eventbrite > \n \nThis event is made possible by the Kathleen J. Eberle Memorial Lecture Series\, the Campus Activities Board\, the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, and the Office of the President.\n  \nBlackburn College will host Cyntoia Brown-Long\, author and advocate for criminal justice reform and victims of trafficking\, as a speaker on Monday\, April 3\, at 7:00 PM in Bothwell Auditorium. As part of Blackburn’s observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month\, Brown-Long will share her journey of being trafficked and arrested during her early teenage years\, being tried as an adult and incarcerated for killing a man who solicited her for sex\, and her path to redemption inside and after prison. Q&A and book signing will follow. \n“Cyntoia’s life is both remarkable and inspirational simply from a human point of view\, but I am convinced that Blackburn’s students will especially benefit from her visit\,” said Al Sturgeon\, Vice President for Diverse and Equitable Student Life and Dean of Students at Blackburn. “A college education had a transformative impact on Cyntoia’s life while in prison\, and her message continues to provide a perspective that transforms others.” \nHer memoir\, “Free Cyntoia: My Search for Redemption in the American Prison System\,” written while in prison\, documents her early years and the 15 years she was incarcerated. Set against the shocking backdrop of a life behind bars and the injustice of sentencing sex-trafficked juveniles as adults\, she struggled to overcome a legacy of birth-family addiction and a lifetime of being ostracized and abandoned by society. Brown-Long stated of her time in prison\, “I was just a teenager when I was sent to live behind a razor-wire fence. My entire coming of age was within the walls of the Tennessee Prison for Women.” \nHer life changed dramatically when the prison education principal took her under her wing and introduced her to a spiritual path. She was encouraged to build a positive life in prison and to resist the negative influences that lead to despair. The journey that followed was a roller coaster ride that included earning a college degree from Lipscomb University while inside prison\, an unauthorized Netflix documentary about her life\, a profound encounter with God\, an unlikely romance\, and\, eventually\, a commuted sentence by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam. She received unprecedented national and international support from social media advocates\, pastors\, and celebrities and was finally released from prison on August 7\, 2019. \nPart of the Blackburn event will include a Q&A with Brown-Long\, moderated by Blackburn’s Chair of the Leadership\, Law and Public Service Department\, Dr. Laura Wiedlocher. \n“Cynotia’s journey from victim to advocate is an opportunity for students to learn about the complexities within the US justice system\,” Wiedlocher shared. “Students have been studying cases like Cyntoia’s in their course work and in some classes\, even Cyntoia’s case. Being afforded the opportunity to meet Cyntoia and hear her story makes the abstract concrete.” \nShe added\, “This event would not be possible without the endowed speaker series donation given by the Eberle family and collaboration across campus groups.” In addition to the Kathleen J. Eberle Memorial Lecture Series fund\, the event is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board\, the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, as well as funds from the Office of the President. \nBrown-Long stated that she hopes her story will inspire others and shine a light on the injustice many still face\, especially the injustice to women and children in American prisons. She continues to work with service providers\, judicial bodies\, and correctional agencies to provide training\, auditing\, and coaching designed to develop a dignified and empowering approach to corrections\, programming\, and case management. Alongside her husband\, Jaime\, she also co-founded The JFAM Foundation to better serve and advocate for individuals affected by human trafficking\, youth services involvement\, and incarceration. \nShe was awarded the 2022 Leadership Prize from the Juvenile Law Center for her work in advocating for justice-involved youth. In January 2020\, the Vera Institute of Justice recognized Cyntoia as one of the Best of Justice Reform honorees. She was a 2020 Nominee for the NAACP Literary Image Award and has been featured as a guest columnist for the Washington Post. \nTickets are required for this free program\, which will begin at 7:00 PM in Bothwell Auditorium on the Blackburn campus. Copies of her book “Free Cyntoia” are available for purchase in Blackburn’s Campus Bookstore before the event and during the book signing. Find more information and reserve tickets at blackburn.edu/cyntoia.
