SUMMARY:Admissions Open House Event
DESCRIPTION:Reserve your spot > \n### \nDiscover Life As A Blackburn College Student at Upcoming Fall Open House Event\nMeet Professors and Students\, Explore Campus\, Receive Instant Admissions\, and Learn about the Powerful Impact of our Distinct Work Program When You Attend \nBlackburn College will welcome interested students and families to campus for a Fall Open House on Monday\, October 13\, 2025\, beginning at 9:00 am. Hosted by the Admissions and Financial Aid teams\, the event is open to both future first-time and transfer students who want to learn more about academic programs\, student life\, and the admissions process. \nDuring the event\, prospective students and their guests will tour Blackburn’s beautiful 80-acre campus\, meet current students and professors for personal conversations\, learn about campus life and the nation’s only student-managed Work Program\, connect with Admissions and Financial Aid counselors to discuss scholarship and aid opportunities\, and receive instant admissions decisions by bringing transcripts for review. \nJustin Norwood\, Vice President for Inclusive Enrollment and a Blackburn graduate\, emphasized how impactful the experience can be. “An Open House is more than just an information session. It’s an opportunity to imagine yourself as part of our community. You’ll not only meet professors and staff who are invested in your success\, but you’ll also connect with other prospective students who may end up becoming your first friends at Blackburn. We know that finding the right college is a big decision\, and our team is committed to helping every student discover a place where they feel supported\, challenged\, and inspired.” \nThe day will highlight how Blackburn’s one-of-a-kind approach to education — where students earn their degree while gaining real-world work experience through the student-managed Work Program — gives graduates a competitive advantage after college. Students and families will also have the chance to learn about unique opportunities\, like a financial aid approach designed to meet individual student needs. \nFor students who cannot attend the October 13 Open House event\, Blackburn also offers personalized campus visits throughout the year. \nTo register for the Open House or to schedule a personalized visit\, go to the Visit page or email admissions@blackburn.edu.

SUMMARY:Choir Concert: Schubert’s Mass in G Major
DESCRIPTION:The season concludes with a significant choral event as Blackburn College’s three choirs—College Choir\, Conservatory Choir\, and Community Choir—join forces to perform Schubert’s Mass in G Major. \nThis concert represents the culmination of the Music program’s renewed commitment to fostering community connections. With funding from the Illinois Arts Council\, Blackburn launched the Conservatory Choir in the fall\, offering high school students from districts without music programs a choral experience. Additionally\, the College reintroduced the Community Choir\, a reimagined version of the previously established community ensemble that had been inactive since the pandemic. While each choir performed separately last semester\, this concert marks the first time all three ensembles will unite for a major work. \nAdding to the evening’s significance\, Blackburn’s music majors will premiere their original compositions\, developed through mentorship with award-winning Nashville songwriter Dr. Kim McLean. Students composed and arranged their works for choir and orchestra\, and each will perform as the soloist on their piece—an unparalleled opportunity to gain real-world experience in songwriting and performance. \nFor additional details\, ticket reservations\, or inquiries\, please contact music@blackburn.edu.

SUMMARY:Science Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Blackburn College is thrilled to announce the 36th Annual Science Day is scheduled for Friday\, April 11\, 2025. One of the College’s most celebrated traditions\, Science Day welcomes high school students from across the region to the Blackburn campus for a day of hands-on science\, dynamic demonstrations\, and scholarship opportunities. \nCoordinated entirely by Blackburn science student workers as part of the College’s nationally recognized Work Program\, in addition to numerous student\, staff and faculty volunteers\, Science Day is an event unlike any other. Last year\, the event welcomed more than 200 regional students and teachers\, awarding scholarships to top participants and their high schools. This year’s event aims to inspire even more students to explore science and discover exciting future career paths. \n“Science Day is an amazing experience for all involved\,” said senior Alexia Mosby\, who is co-coordinating the 2025 event. “My favorite part of planning the event is watching the high school students reap the benefits of our efforts. Blackburn’s Science Day gives high school students an opportunity to learn about science by engaging students with unique demonstrations conducted by Blackburn students and professors. Not only do the visiting high school students benefit\, volunteers and workers of Science Day benefit by planning and running the event all on their own\, which truly exemplifies Blackburn as a unique student managed work college.” \nScience Day starts with a friendly competition in biology\, chemistry\, physics\, and psychology. Awards are given to individual students as well as high schools with top-performing teams in each category. Throughout the day\, Blackburn students\, staff and faculty will lead engaging activities\, including: \nWitnessing exciting chemical reactions and even explosions\nExploring animal and reptile care in Blackburn’s Vivarium\nDiving into fields like computer science\, physics\, and psychology fields through hands-on experiments and demonstrations\n“Science Day is an amazing experience for the biology workers running it and the high school students who are participating\,” said senior Jessica Muckensturm\, who is also helping coordinate Science Day this year. “My favorite part of the day is watching all of the high school students get involved in the demos and get excited about the different aspects of science. We will continue working to make Science Day better every year!” \nSchools and educators interested in attending are encouraged to contact Mosby and Muckensturm\, Science Day coordinators\, at biology@blackburn.edu for additional details\, including an event schedule and registration forms.

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King\, Jr. Convocation
DESCRIPTION:Watch the event from Bothwell Auditorium \nBlackburn College is bringing its annual Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Convocation back to campus. The event will be held Tuesday\, January 17\, 2023\, in Bothwell Auditorium at 4:00 pm. The College last hosted an in-person MLK Convocation in January 2020\, holding virtual celebrations in 2021 and 2022. This year’s event will include the presentation of the annual Blackburn MLK Student Leadership Award\, a proclamation from Carlinville Mayor Sarah Oswald\, and a keynote address from Dr. Leon Chestang ‘59. The convocation is open to Blackburn faculty\, staff\, students\, and all members of the community. \nA distinguished social work educator\, scholar\, and expert on race and culture\, Dr. Chestang was among the first Black students admitted to Blackburn in 1954. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in sociology\, he received a Master’s degree at Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Dr. Chestang served as Professor and Dean of the School of Social Work at Wayne State University in Detroit for nearly twenty years. Most recently\, he held the position of Visiting Professor and Associate Dean of the School of Social Work at Jackson State University.  \nDr. Chestang’s work is taught throughout the U.S. and internationally. He authored the first article on transracial adoption in social work literature and set the tone for much of the current efforts to find permanent adoptive homes for children. His doctoral dissertation broke new ground in understanding how African Americans achieve in the face of discrimination and racism. His career has included service as a child welfare worker\, private practitioner of counseling children and families\, and community organizer. In addition\, he has served as a distinguished visiting professor or lecturer at Howard University\, Norfolk State University\, Fordham University\, New York University\, Columbia University\, the University of Michigan\, Bryn Mawr College\, and the University of Utah. \n“Dr. Chestang’s extraordinary insights as part of the first generation of Black scholars admitted to Blackburn during a transformational time for this College and country will inspire and empower this campus and community\,” said Dr. Margaret Lawler\, Executive Director of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion at Blackburn. “Our annual convocation is an opportunity to both celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. and recommit ourselves to the ideals of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, which are directly linked to the College’s mission\, values\, and goals.” \nLawler continued\, “We are excited to welcome Dr. Chestang back to campus as the keynote speaker\, learn from his expertise\, and grow in our awareness.” \nBlackburn College’s annual MLK Convocation is coordinated by the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and will feature a public reception before and after the event.

SUMMARY:Billy Goats Gruff - An Opera for Children
DESCRIPTION:The Blackburn College Department of Music & Theatre will perform an operatic production for children\, “The Billy Goats Gruff” on Friday\, November 18. This free performance is open to the public and will take place in Bothwell Auditorium at 7:00 pm. \nRead the press release. \nBlackburn College’s production of “The Billy Goats Gruff opera is directed by professional baritone Evan Bravos. Music for the show will be directed by Dr. Joseph Welch\, Professor of Music at Blackburn. The production is an adaptation of the classic children’s story and Norwegian fairytale\, “Three Billy Goats Gruff\,” by John Davies. “During the course of the opera\, the three Billy Goats consider how they might deal with the bully by avoiding him altogether and resolve to talk about the problem with grownups as soon as they’re able. In the end\, however\, strength of character and determination win the day\,” Davies said of his adaptation. “It makes for some fun theater\, though\, and hopefully provides a point of departure for subsequent classroom discussion.” Davies repurposed selections from well-known operas composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, Gaetano Donizetti\, and Gioachino Rossini to help tell the tale. \nDonations will be accepted.
