SUMMARY:Martin Luther King\, Jr. Convocation
DESCRIPTION:Watch the event from Bothwell Auditorium \nBlackburn College is bringing its annual Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Convocation back to campus. The event will be held Tuesday\, January 17\, 2023\, in Bothwell Auditorium at 4:00 pm. The College last hosted an in-person MLK Convocation in January 2020\, holding virtual celebrations in 2021 and 2022. This year’s event will include the presentation of the annual Blackburn MLK Student Leadership Award\, a proclamation from Carlinville Mayor Sarah Oswald\, and a keynote address from Dr. Leon Chestang ‘59. The convocation is open to Blackburn faculty\, staff\, students\, and all members of the community. \nA distinguished social work educator\, scholar\, and expert on race and culture\, Dr. Chestang was among the first Black students admitted to Blackburn in 1954. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in sociology\, he received a Master’s degree at Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Dr. Chestang served as Professor and Dean of the School of Social Work at Wayne State University in Detroit for nearly twenty years. Most recently\, he held the position of Visiting Professor and Associate Dean of the School of Social Work at Jackson State University.  \nDr. Chestang’s work is taught throughout the U.S. and internationally. He authored the first article on transracial adoption in social work literature and set the tone for much of the current efforts to find permanent adoptive homes for children. His doctoral dissertation broke new ground in understanding how African Americans achieve in the face of discrimination and racism. His career has included service as a child welfare worker\, private practitioner of counseling children and families\, and community organizer. In addition\, he has served as a distinguished visiting professor or lecturer at Howard University\, Norfolk State University\, Fordham University\, New York University\, Columbia University\, the University of Michigan\, Bryn Mawr College\, and the University of Utah. \n“Dr. Chestang’s extraordinary insights as part of the first generation of Black scholars admitted to Blackburn during a transformational time for this College and country will inspire and empower this campus and community\,” said Dr. Margaret Lawler\, Executive Director of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion at Blackburn. “Our annual convocation is an opportunity to both celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. and recommit ourselves to the ideals of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion\, which are directly linked to the College’s mission\, values\, and goals.” \nLawler continued\, “We are excited to welcome Dr. Chestang back to campus as the keynote speaker\, learn from his expertise\, and grow in our awareness.” \nBlackburn College’s annual MLK Convocation is coordinated by the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and will feature a public reception before and after the event.

SUMMARY:Billy Goats Gruff - An Opera for Children
DESCRIPTION:The Blackburn College Department of Music & Theatre will perform an operatic production for children\, “The Billy Goats Gruff” on Friday\, November 18. This free performance is open to the public and will take place in Bothwell Auditorium at 7:00 pm. \nRead the press release. \nBlackburn College’s production of “The Billy Goats Gruff opera is directed by professional baritone Evan Bravos. Music for the show will be directed by Dr. Joseph Welch\, Professor of Music at Blackburn. The production is an adaptation of the classic children’s story and Norwegian fairytale\, “Three Billy Goats Gruff\,” by John Davies. “During the course of the opera\, the three Billy Goats consider how they might deal with the bully by avoiding him altogether and resolve to talk about the problem with grownups as soon as they’re able. In the end\, however\, strength of character and determination win the day\,” Davies said of his adaptation. “It makes for some fun theater\, though\, and hopefully provides a point of departure for subsequent classroom discussion.” Davies repurposed selections from well-known operas composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, Gaetano Donizetti\, and Gioachino Rossini to help tell the tale. \nDonations will be accepted. Contact music@blackburn.edu or call 217-854-5704 to reserve your spot. \n

SUMMARY:Blackburn Humanities Salon
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, a Salon was a gathering of people who came together to exchange and discuss intellectual and artistic ideas of the day. Fancy attire was worn and tea and cakes were served. To honor this tradition and establish a creative community at Blackburn for writers\, artists\, performers\, and lovers of all art\, the English & Communications department is launching a monthly Humanities Salon. The Salon will be held on the first Thursday of every month in Jaenke at 6pm and is open to all students\, faculty\, and staff who want to: \n● read their own creative work;\n● perform a short musical\, theatrical\, dance\, or any stage act;\n● share and discuss an original work of art;\n● share any work of art of any medium that you simply love;\n● listen and be part of the creative community at Blackburn. \nLight catered refreshments will be served and theme costumes or formal attire of all varieties are encouraged but not required. \n  \nSeptember 1\, 2022: An Evening of Favorites\n● For the first Salon of the semester\, come and share your favorite poem or passage (original or not)\, artwork\, or piece of music. \nOctober 6\, 2022: Celebration of the Spooky and the Queer\n● October is the month of Halloween and LGBTQ+ history\, so come out of the coffin and share your favorite scary/ghostly/monstrous or fabulously queer work of writing\, art\, or music. \nNovember 3\, 2022: Under the Beaver Moon\n● November is the month of the Beaver Moon\, when people would set traps for beavers before all retired to their lodges for the winter. Before winter hibernation\, come get cozy in front of the fire and share a piece of art that warms your heart. \nDecember 1\, 2022: Winter Wonderland Ball\n● For the last Salon of the semester\, put on your fanciest frock for an evening of elegance and share your most sparkling and chilling winter creations.
