The concert is free and open to the public. \nThis event will feature students participating in Blackburn’s Music program and will feature solo vocal and piano performances. The Blackburn Music program is designed to prepare students with a mastery of vocal and piano performance skills while providing in-depth entrepreneurial knowledge needed to launch professional careers in music. She works primarily as a score vocalist for film and television projects\, including “Doctor Strange\,” “Frozen 2\,” “Mulan\,” “Sing 2\,” and more. She is on the roster of the award-winning ensemble ‘Tonality\,’ a group using the art of choral music to promote social justice\, and regularly sings with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. DESCRIPTION:A Jazz Concert featuring the Adaron (Pops) Jackson Trio will help kick off the new year on Friday\, January 13\, 2023 at 7:00 pm in Bothwell Auditorium. \nAn educator\, musician and clinician\, Adaron “Pops” Jackson serves as Assistant Professor and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Missouri St. Louis. Originally from East St. Louis\, Jackson has toured nationally and internationally with a diverse array of artists\, including The Temptations\, Frank Morgan\, Victor Mendoza\, and Ellis Marsalis. He has performed at the Jazz at Lincoln Center: Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola\, Chicago Jazz Festival\, Capitol Jazz Festival\, and Kansas City Blues and Jazz Festival. As a composer and arranger\, Pops has written works for various ensembles ranging from small to large\, most recently the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. \nThis event is part of the Department of Music & Theatre’s Guest Artist Series and is free for students and the public to attend. DESCRIPTION:Blackburn College will celebrate the holiday season with its annual Christmas at Blackburn event on Sunday\, December 5\, 2022\, at 7:00 pm in Clegg Chapel. The performance will be free and open to the public. \nA Lessons and Carols service\, the celebration will include the Blackburn College Choir\, student instrumental performances by Jordan Watts (flute) and Cody Moore (violin)\, and scripture readings presented by students\, faculty\, and community members. Blackburn’s Music faculty\, Dr. Joseph Welch and Dr. See Tsai Chan\, will direct the production and provide accompaniment\, respectively.  \n“We are honored to continue the tradition of celebrating Christmas at Blackburn. The carols and candlelight make for a magical evening ushering in the Christmas season\,” Raven Brooks\, a music and theater faculty assistant\, explained.  \nThere will be no reservations required for the event. DESCRIPTION:The Blackburn College Department of Music & Theatre will perform an operatic production for children\, “The Billy Goats Gruff” on Friday\, November 18. This free performance is open to the public and will take place in Bothwell Auditorium at 7:00 pm. \nRead the press release. \nBlackburn College’s production of “The Billy Goats Gruff opera is directed by professional baritone Evan Bravos. Music for the show will be directed by Dr. Joseph Welch\, Professor of Music at Blackburn. The production is an adaptation of the classic children’s story and Norwegian fairytale\, “Three Billy Goats Gruff\,” by John Davies. “During the course of the opera\, the three Billy Goats consider how they might deal with the bully by avoiding him altogether and resolve to talk about the problem with grownups as soon as they’re able. In the end\, however\, strength of character and determination win the day\,” Davies said of his adaptation. “It makes for some fun theater\, though\, and hopefully provides a point of departure for subsequent classroom discussion.” Davies repurposed selections from well-known operas composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, Gaetano Donizetti\, and Gioachino Rossini to help tell the tale. \nDonations will be accepted.
