SUMMARY:Hope for Humanization: A Conversation on Social Justice & Second Chances
DESCRIPTION:Blackburn College will host Dr. Larry D. Terry II\, a distinguished criminal and restorative justice scholar\, author and leader. Currently Vice President for Outreach at Penn State University\, Terry will speak on “The Hope for Humanization: A Conversation on Social Justice & Second Chances.” This event\, part of the Kathleen J. Eberle Memorial Lecture Series in the Social Sciences\, will be held on Wednesday\, April 24\, at 7:00 p.m. in Bothwell Auditorium. It is free and open to the public\, no tickets required. \nThis event at Blackburn College is funded through the Kathleen J. Eberle Memorial Lecture Series in the Social Sciences\, an endowed fund established to bring guest lecturers and speakers to campus who will inspire\, engage\, and inform students\, faculty\, and the community in the area of social sciences\, with a focus on social justice issues.  \nTerry brings a wealth of expertise and insight to his lectures\, with research interests spanning police-community relations\, criminal justice reform (including second-chance communities/returning citizen assistance)\, restorative justice\, community leadership\, and democratic governance. He has spent years addressing incarceration and police-community relations in the United States. In 2020\, his commitment to criminal justice reform led to his appointment by Governor Ralph Northam to the Virginia State Crime Commission. Before that\, Terry served as a member of Dallas’ Second Chance Community Improvement Program team — one of the nation’s first felony community courts with a mission to reduce incarceration through holistic intervention programming — and in 2017\, launched the Community Leadership Academy in partnership with the Dallas Police Department. \nTerry holds a doctorate in Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Dallas\, a master’s degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University\, and a bachelor’s degree in Black Studies from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. His professional experience also includes serving as the executive director for the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service and as a professor at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy\, both at the University of Virginia (UVA). Terry has served on the Center for Nonprofit Excellence board and as President of the Consortium of University Public Service Organizations. His work has also been widely published in esteemed professional and academic journals\, further solidifying his reputation as a leading voice in social sciences.

SUMMARY:Improv Masterclass with JT Nagle
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 5\, at 7:00 pm\, Bothwell Auditorium will host an Improv Masterclass. The event will feature JT Nagle\, a professional actor\, improviser\, and director from Chicago\, Illinois. The masterclass will provide a unique opportunity to see a “behind the scenes” look at how Improv shows are created. The show is designed to be interactive\, with some light audience participation. However\, most of the performances will be done by Blackburn’s improv class students.

On April 5\, 2024\, students from surrounding high schools will be coming to campus for this event to compete for monetary prizes for their school as well as a chance to win a Blackburn College Scholarship. DESCRIPTION:Historically\, a Salon was a gathering of people who came together to exchange and discuss intellectual and artistic ideas of the day. Fancy attire was worn\, and tea and cakes were served. \nTo honor this tradition and establish a creative community at Blackburn for writers\, artists\, performers\, and lovers of all art\, the English & Communications hosts our own Humanities Salon on the first Thursday of each month at 6 pm in Jaenke\, which is open to all students\, faculty\, and staff who want to: \n● read their own creative work;\n● perform a short musical\, theatrical\, dance\, or any stage act;\n● share and discuss an original work of art;\n● share any work of art of any medium that you simply love;\n● listen and be part of the creative community at Blackburn. \nRefreshments will be served and on-theme attire is encouraged! \n  \nSeptember 5\, 2023: The Mystery Salon \nThe Blackburn Humanities Salon returns for the ’23-’24 school year with the first salon of the fall semester\, The Mystery Salon. \n  \nOctober 6\, 2023: Out of the Coffin Salon \nOctober is the month for Halloween and LGBTQ+ history\, so crawl out of your coffins to Jaenke\, on October 5th at 6 pm\, and come share your favorite creations on those themes. \n  \nNovember 2\, 2023: The Home Salon \nCome get cozy by the fire with us as we share works that make us feel safe and warm\, and celebrate all the people\, places\, and things in our lives that give us a sense of belonging and home. \n  \nDecember 4\, 2023: Showcase \nJoin the English and Communications department as we showcase the works of writers in this fall’s English and creative writing classes. \n  \nFebruary 8\, 2024: The Love Salon \nJoin us for our second annual Love Salon\, a night of celebrating all the kinds of love that sustain us\, from friendship to romance to our furry friends. \n  \nMarch 7\, 2024: The Future Salon \nJoin us for and evening of works that dream\, dread\, and otherwise conceptualize the future\, from science fiction to celebrations of hope. \n  \nApril 4\, 2024: The Salon in Bloom \nIt’s almost the end of the semester\, and so many things are the beginning to blossom! Come to the Salon in Bloom and share works that celebrate the spirit of growth and new beginnings. \n  \nMay 1\, 2024: The Lodge Grand Opening \nJoin Blackburn’s Literary Publishing class in celebrating the launch of the second issue of The Lodge\, Blackburn’s online student literary and arts publication!
