DESCRIPTION:The Methodist University and Blackburn College Centers for Teaching and Learning are co-hosts of an on-campus reading group centered around the book\, Called Beyond Our Selves: Vocation and the Common Good. \nParticipants from both Colleges will receive the book in December 2024 and will complete book read during the Spring 2025 semester. \nThis is open to all faculty\, staff\, and administration on campus. The book group will be made up of 10 members from Methodist University and 10 members from Blackburn College\, there are currently 7 remaining books for Blackburn. \nThe first meeting will be with Blackburn College members only\, in that time we will cover the introduction and format for the combined meetings. This meeting will occur Monday\, February 3rd at 12:00pm (details to come). The next two meetings will be virtual with Methodist University\, March 3rd (covering part 1 & 2 of the book) at 2:30pm and March 24th (covering part 3 & 4 of the book) at 2:30pm. Links to the meetings will be sent to all participants in advance of the meetings. \nThis book is written from an educational perspective\, but it speaks to the work that is being done across the Blackburn Campus. We welcome anyone that is interested!

They will also see first-hand how Blackburn’s unique approach to education—where students earn their degrees while developing impactful skills employers are looking for and building a resume full of real-world work experience—gives graduates a four-year head start. \nJustin Norwood\, Vice President for Inclusive Enrollment and a Blackburn graduate\, encourages students who want a place to feel supported and inspired to thrive to attend the event\, explaining\, “We welcome you to experience what makes our community unique — like the close mentoring relationships with peers and professors. The session is designed for individuals interested in advancing their education or launching a career in teaching. \nThe information event will highlight the benefits of Blackburn’s flexible online programs\, including: \n\nCourses designed for busy professionals and are 100% online.\nInsight into class structure and how students can build supportive connections.\nIndividualized mentoring from experienced faculty members.\nDetails on program eligibility\, financial aid options\, and next steps to apply.\n\nPrograms Featured in the Session: \nTeacher Licensure Program\nAccelerated training to prepare people with bachelor’s degrees in other fields to transition into the classroom\, focusing on areas and schools most in need. Participants train with Blackburn’s Teacher Education Department in three semesters\, gaining hands-on classroom experience and preparing to pass certification exams and be teaching full-time in three (3) semesters by fall 2026. \nOnline Early Childhood Education Program\nDesigned for early childhood education professionals to complete a bachelor’s degree or help enhance Gateway credentials. Graduates will gain the training to advance their careers and become licensed\, highly qualified educators. This program combines personal experiences and connections between students and experienced professors.
