B.A., Hanover College
I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where my family still lives, and where my sports allegiances still lie. I attended Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana, graduating in 2001 with a BA in English and a minor in Communication. After college, I lived and worked in Indianapolis and Bloomington, Indiana, before moving to Carlinville in 2011, when my wife accepted a faculty position at Blackburn.

WHY I CHOSE TO WORK AT BLACKBURN
My wife is on the faculty, and for two years prior to my employment here, I was witness to the enriching, inclusive Blackburn community. Over time, I realized more and more how much I wanted to be directly involved with and contribute to that community. Also, as the product of a liberal arts education myself, I believe strongly in BC’s curriculum and academic mission.
Blackburn College rests at the intersection of education and experience, and Blackburn graduates are prepared for the world—be it the workforce or graduate school—in a unique way. Coursework ia a part of any undergraduate program, but through Blackburn’s Work Program, students have experimental learning opportunities that simply aren’t available elsewhere, which gives them a competitive edge over their peers.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A COLLEGE
Foremost, choose a college that feels right for you—one that meets your needs and will provide a comfortable environment, but that will also challenge and motivate you. Also, don’t be afraid to go somewhere different than your friends.
MY HOBBIES AND INTERESTS INCLUDE
My leisure time typically revolves around listening to music, watching TV or films, and reading. My favorite bands, historically speaking, are Joy Division and Talking Heads. Right now, the best band on the planet is Baroness. I’ll tell you my favorite movie is Pulp Fiction, but a strong argument could be made that it’s Love Actually. I love the works of Cormac McCarthy and Kurt Vonnegut. I also volunteer at the Macoupin County animal shelter, cleaning kennels, cuddling cats, walking dogs, and doing community outreach and fundraising events. None of these things gives me more joy, though, than spending time with my wife, Karen, and our three dogs Penny, Buddy, and Daisy. On nice days, you can find all five of us in our back yard digging holes (for different purposes, depending on species).
