Freshman Ugo Pierantoni, Auckland, New Zealand, knew he wanted to study in the United States and discovered Blackburn College while searching an online athletic scouting website. Ugo immediately knew he wanted a Blackburn experience.
Although homesick, Ugo feels more and more at home every day. A member of the men’s basketball team, the friendships he’s made with teammates have helped not only improve his skills on the court, but have kept his mind off of being away from home due to the busy season.
Adjusting to the new environment has been hard with Ugo noticing many differences between New Zealand and the United States, including the friendliness of Americans. “I wouldn’t miss this experience for anything,” said Ugo. “Coming to America really makes a person think about what is back at home that isn’t here, and makes that person appreciate those kinds of things all the much more.”
Ugo’s plan was to spend his first year of college at Blackburn, but after only a semester, he has hopes of completing his degree here. During his time in the U.S., he wants to travel and see some of the country’s larger cities and famous landmarks. “I just really want to appreciate what this country has to offer,” he said.
