Blackburn offers 3 levels of graphic design courses as well as options for hands on publication design. All Graphic Design majors produce no less than 20 outstanding pieces for their professional portfolio, as well as hold two on-campus exhibitions in junior and senior seminar. The Graphic Design major prepares students to immediately join the profession.
Points of Distinction
Graphic Design majors are capable of creating and organizing highly complex digital creations for use in print, web, social media, and digital delivery systems. Students study a wide variety of design challenges, addressing subjects that include visual literacy, typography, layout, and digital illustration.
Why this Major?
Graphic Design is a directly applicable field of study. Students are exposed to the entire Adobe Creative Cloud on state of the art iMacs. While beginning classes focus on foundational elements, advanced students move on to explore page layout, package design, animation and video editing. Students often find the versatility and exploratory nature of digital design very compelling.
Graphic Art is available as a minor.
Mueller Humanities Fellowship: Students can apply for this between Junior and Senior year. Past students have traveled to design and art symposia in the country as well as locations in Europe and South America.
The Publication and Production course is co-taught by Graphic Design and Communications instructors. It’s primary goal is the design and layout of Vortex, the annual college sponsored creative arts journal.
Activities & Events
The Visual Arts Gallery with monthly exhibitions open to the entire college community.
Capstone courses for both majors are Sophomore Review, Junior Seminar and Senior Seminar: in these courses students do their own research and lead discussions with the end goal of an exhibition at the end of each semester.
Clubs & Organizations
The Art Club is organized and managed by students to plan art-related programs and activities outside of the classroom and student experience.
Students are able to identify internship opportunities with area businesses and organizations who can provide real-world arts administration experiences.

Graduates move on to graduate school or work in design, PR, museum/gallery, advertising, arts related positions in nearby communities as well as Chicago and St. Louis. Recent graduates have also gone to graduate school for design, fine art and industrial design nationally and internationally.
The graphic design program in constantly expanding to parallel developments in the professional world. 3D modeling and printing have recently been added as well as tracks in video editing in upper level courses.
The Visual Arts Center houses a state-of-the-art graphics lab as well as a fully functional photography studio and darkroom. 18 iMacs support the entire Adobe Creative Cloud as well as several Autodesk applications and Blender. Printers include wide format, hi-res photo and 3D capabilities.
On-campus gallery, that would rival many fine arts venues, allows students to showcase and discuss their work in a professional setting.
Faculty have hands on experience in public relations, publishing, graphic design and illustration. Faculty is well versed in contemporary design theory as well as practically applied techniques.
Faculty received their degrees at the University of Chicago and Iowa State University.
Graphic Design faculty consistently engage in workshops, residencies and lectures as well as exhibiting in national and international exhibitions. In recent years faculty have exhibited work nationally and internationally in galleries, museums and video screenings. Faculty have also participated in ongoing institutes sponsored by the Art 21 Education organization and have been accepted into artist residencies in Finland and Latvia.
