We offer five majors in the English Department: Literature, Creative Writing, Middle Grades Language Arts, and Secondary English Language Arts. Our students work in a variety of Work Program positions including journalists for the college’s student-run newspaper The ’Burnian, disc jockeys for the online radio station, writing tutors, and department and public relations assistants.
The Literature major offers historical surveys in British and American literature and courses such as African-American literature and World Literature. Our topics courses link to other majors/minors on campus, such as Literature and the Natural World, Literature and Gender, and Literature, Law, and Leadership.
The Creative Writing major follows a workshop model in which students share, critique, and revise their work. Creative Writing majors are introduced to all genres—narrative, poetry, drama, non-fiction, creative non-fiction—until they eventually specialize. Majors take part in the department’s annual creative writing contest and publication of the college’s literary magazine, VORTEX.
