September 9, 2015, Carlinville, IL— US News has ranked Blackburn College as #5 among the Best Value Regional Colleges in the Midwest. Blackburn also placed in the top 50 nationally for Best Regional Colleges. The annual rankings are provided as a resource to students seeking an institution that best matches their interests and preferences. US News reviews data on more than 1,800 schools, and reviews each college on up to 16 indicators of academic excellence. Colleges are also ranked against their peers.
Blackburn was also recently ranked by The Washington Monthly as one of the top 50 baccalaureate colleges in the U.S., and received the highest ranking in Illinois. The annual rankings are produced by the national magazine as a way to draw attention to colleges and universities who are exceptional in providing valuable educational opportunities. The institutions are ranked based on factors not always used by other publications, specifically ranking them by social mobility, research and community service.
According to Washington Monthly, “The college rankings are designed to embody the American higher education makeup at the institutional level. Instead of lauding colleges for closing their doors to all but an elite few, we give high marks to institutions that enroll low-income students, help them graduate, and don’t charge them an arm and a leg to attend. Universities that bring in research dollars are rewarded by our standards, as are those whose undergraduates go on to earn PhDs. And we recognize institutions that are committed to public service, both in the way they teach and in encouraging students to enter service-focused careers.”
