    The Education Department of Blackburn College provides teacher candidates a comprehensive study of education practice and theory along with practical teaching experience. Each program in the Education Department provides excellent preparation for candidates to become effective educators in their chosen field. The Department offers the following programs that lead to teacher licensure:

    • Elementary Education (Grades 1-6)
    • Middle Grades (Grades 5-8) in the following Content Areas:
      • Language Arts
      • Mathematics
      • Social Science
      • Science
    • Secondary Education (Grades 9-12) in the following Content Areas:
      • English Language Arts
      • Mathematics
      • Social Science: History
      • Science: Biology
    • Special Programs (Grades K-12) in:
      • Physical Education
      • Foreign Language: Spanish

    Learning Behavior Specialist-1 (LBS-1)
    Blackburn College offers coursework for candidates to earn the Learning Behavior Specialist-1 Endorsement, which prepares candidates to teach in special education settings at their licensed grade level.
    Students also may choose the Educational Studies Major, which does not lead to teacher licensure, in the following areas:

    • Education Paraprofessional
    • Education Research and Writing
    • Writing and Designing Children’s Literature

    The Education Department also offers a Learning Development Management major and minor, which emphasizes training and development of personnel in the workplace. Coursework required for this major is interdisciplinary and all students complete a related internship during their course of study.
