Dr. M. Kelly James Joins Blackburn College Faculty, Bringing Deep Expertise in Sociology, Criminology, and Student-Centered Education

Blackburn College proudly welcomes Dr. M. Kelly James as a distinguished addition to the faculty for the 2025–2026 academic year. A scholar, educator, and mentor with nearly three decades of teaching and leadership experience, Dr. James brings a wealth of knowledge in sociology, criminology, gender studies, and social justice education.

Dr. James holds a Ph.D. in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology and a minor in Women’s Studies from Louisiana State University. She also earned a master’s degree in Sociology and a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Memphis.

Throughout a dynamic academic career, Dr. James has served at institutions including Christian Brothers University, Winthrop University, and the University of St. Thomas. Most recently, she served as a Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Memphis.

Dr. James is a published author with contributions to several academic journals and encyclopedias, and she is a regular presenter at regional and national conferences. Her current research explores how undergraduate service-learning experiences shape student development and social justice engagement.

Outside the classroom, Dr. James is actively engaged in community service, including facilitating writing groups and conducting workshops for diverse audiences.
