Campus Community and Safety Mission Statement

The Mission of Blackburn Campus Community and Safety is to promote a secure and safe learning, living, and working environment for Blackburn students, faculty, and staff. Our emphasis is to promote a safe campus through a community-friendly approach that increases safety through the visibility of security personnel, preventive patrols, conflict resolution, and crime prevention programs. Campus Community and Safety works closely with local law enforcement and community resources to improve student safety. We strive to make every visitor of Blackburn Campus feel welcome, safe, and secure.

Campus Safety and Security Location

The Campus Safety and Security office is a part of the Student Life Office, located in Demuzio Campus Center (DCC) 129. The Director of Campus Safety’s office is located in the Student Life Suite in DCC.

Security can be reached Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm at 217-854-5550 or at 217-854-3231 ext. 5550 (non-emergencies only). Emergency situations should be reported to 911.

Security officers can be reached 24 hours per day by contacting the security on-call phone at 217-825-3042. If there is any emergency, please dial 911 for assistance.

Campus crime is not always preventable. But thinking smart and taking the necessary precautions is the best way to stay safe on your college’s campus. By being well-prepared and aware of your surroundings, you will be able to avoid many scary situations and enjoy your experience at the college.

Crime Reporting

Members of the Blackburn College community are encouraged to report all crimes and emergencies in a timely manner. If there is a crime in progress or an emergency, you are strongly encouraged to call 911 immediately.

Blackburn Campus Safety patrols the campus beginning at 5:30 a.m. on weekdays and cover until 12:30 a.m. On weekends, Campus Safety patrols from 5:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. Campus Safety also works special events to include athletics. As noted above, Campus Safety may be contacted 24 hours per day to assist with all calls for assistance.

If you observe a crime or a suspicious incident, call IMMEDIATELY. Don’t assume someone else has made the call. DO NOT report any situation or emergency by sending an email or text to a member of the Campus Safety staff; this may not be received for hours or days. Follow the below guidelines to file a report.

If You Contact 911

Try to provide the dispatcher with accurate, detailed information about the problem in a calm manner.

  • Provide all details of the incident/situation
  • Give the location of the incident
  • Describe the type of incident and what the emergency is
  • Describe the suspect, suspect’s vehicle, license plate number and/or direction of travel if available
