Student Counseling Services

The purpose of Blackburn College Counseling Services is to create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space to support your overall mental health and wellbeing while you are a student. Our licensed therapists offer a confidential service where you can receive support for a variety of concerns, from adjusting to college life to managing anxiety and depression. Our therapeutic approach is strengths-based, client-centered and focuses on collaboration with each student to determine the best way to address individual needs.

We offer:

  • Individual counseling sessions: explore personal challenges, develop healthy coping strategies, understand emotions, manage mental health symptoms, navigate relationship issues, stress management
  • Crisis Intervention: support and safety planning if experiencing a mental health crisis
  • Provide Referrals: refer to community providers if mental health needs are outside of the scope of service of the counseling center
  • Group Workshops: campus groups can request our counselors to provide education, activities and resources related to different mental health topics

Taking care of your mental health is essential for success while in college and in life. We are committed to providing the care and support you need!

Counseling Services include individualized counseling, crisis intervention, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and virtual counseling.

Hours are available by appointment and often on the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

You might see a therapist for a number of reasons: some choose counseling to deal with academic concerns, like test anxiety, memory, or concentration. Some students have mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, past trauma or are considering going on medication. Some students are concerned with student success and see someone about time or stress management, organization, or study skills. Some athletes even come to counseling to improve their performance on the field, court, or track! Counselors are trained to help you feel engaged, comfortable, and ready to address your concern.

Blackburn College Counseling Services are free of cost to currently enrolled Blackburn College students.

Counseling sessions are private and completely confidential. Confidentiality can only be broken for three reasons: immediate and urgent danger of harming self or others, or there is a court order. See the informed consent for more information.

The counseling center is located in the back hallway of Lumpkin Library. The offices have been recently remodeled and are designed with privacy, accessibility, and confidentiality in mind.

If you would like to make an appointment, please email Mindy (melinda.beisner@blackburn.edu) or Daniel (daniel.lanctot@blackburn.edu) and we will arrange a mutually agreed upon time to meet. You can choose to meet with us on an as needed basis, once a week or bi-weekly.
